What is Mediation?

Mediation is a process through which people resolve conflict voluntarily.  The power is in their hands to resolve their conflict. No agreement is forced on them. A mediator is a neutral person who works with conflicting parties to solve conflict and promote reconciliation and understanding. The mediator does this by facilitating communication between the conflicting parties. The mediator helps the parties talk to each other.

I have had years of experience successfully helping people resolve conflict. My style is direct and clear. I listen well to what the parties say in the mediation and identify mutual interests between the parties. I help the parties build on those mutual interests so that they can find a way to manage their conflict.

I emphasize effective communication, a skill that can be acquired through practice. Through the mediation process, I demonstrate ways of framing statements that encourage listening and sensitivity to another’s point of view. I help the parties practice these skills in a safe, non-threatening environment.
